«Vidisti te». Aeternitas imperii e omen annorum nella politica costantiniana [«Vidisti te». Aeternitas imperii and omen annorum in Constantinian politics]

Keywords: Panegyric VI/7, Constantine I, Apollo Grannus, omen imperii.

Abstract: «Vidisti te». Aeternitas imperii and omen annorum in Constantinian politics Panegyric VI/7 is generally held to be evidence of a “pagan vision” and of Constantine’s link with the god Apollo. However, a careful reading of the text excludes a “vision” and suggests interpreting the presence of the god as an imperial self-celebration. The reference to Nestor gives the text a broader value, of a political nature, with a dual purpose: the preservation of the single authority for the purposes of the common good and the maintenance of harmony, based on the recognition of the role of others.
