Giuliano e la costruzione del consenso: il panegirico “reticente” di Claudio Mamertino [Julian and reaching consensus: the reluctant panegyric of Claudius Mamertinus]
Andrea MADONNA
ABSTRACT
Julian and reaching consensus: the reluctant panegyric of Claudius Mamertinus. The Gratiarum actio speech which Claudius Mamertinus gave in the senate of Constantinople on 1st January 362 to thank Emperor Julian for appointing him as consul for that year is particularly meaningful when considering not only the common features such speech shares with the body of Panegyrici Latini (to which it belongs), but also the allusions and the omissions with which the speaker hints at or completely passes over in silence some issues that would be poignantly topical at a time when Emperor Julian’s consensus was still to be built.
