AMMIANO MARCELLINO E LA CRISI DOPO ADRIANOPOLI

Keywords: Adrianople, Ammianus Marcellinus, Themistius, Vegetius.

Abstract: Ammianus Marcellinus and the crisis following the Battle of Adrianople. The Battle of Adrianople (378 AD) was a turning point not only from a historical point of view, but also from a literary one. Among the authors who witness the crisis following this crucial moment in Roman history, Ammianus Marcellinus is the one who expresses a position that is not immediately clear, unlike authors such as Themistius or Synesius of Cyrene. Above all, he reserves his considerations on this subject in the chapters where he addresses issues of historical methodology, showing how difficult it is to recount contemporary events in his times.
