Abstract: Humanitas and military violence in Ammianus: a surprising harmony? This paper investigates the relationship between military violence and the wertbegriff humanitas in Ammianus’ Res gestae. In particular, it argues that while a concept like humanitas should prevent episodes of violence in military context, in the three cases analysed here (14.10.15, 21.13.10 and 31.4.12) it fails its purpose. This happens because there seems to be a kind of incompatibility between this concept of value and the emperors to which it is linked by Ammianus.
