Gorgons and Ghosts: Exiting the Underworld in Ho­mer and Virgil

Abstract: Close study of the close of the underworld passages in both Ho­mer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid reveals the influence of Homer’s Gorgon ima­gery on Virgil’s depiction of his hero’s infernal exploits, and helps to illustrate a new interpretation for the enigma of the Ivory Gate.
