ALDELMO DI MALMESBURY EPISTOLOGRAFO

Keywords: Aldhelm of Malmesbury, Cantenbury school, Latin language, epistolary.

Abstract: Aldhelm of Malmesbury, epistolographer. Aldhelm, abbot, bishop and man of letters, was a symbolic figure of 7th century England, characterized by wars between different kingdoms that often resulted in acts of atrocities. In this historical context and in this political and cultural climate, the personality of Aldhelm stands out. Trained at the Canterbury school, he is the first Anglo-Saxon author to have adopted the Latin language. Aldhelm left us an interesting corpus of letters that constitutes a privileged observatory for considering the reciprocal relations and exchanges that took place in the 7th century between the two Christian cultures, that of Irish origin and that of Anglo-Saxon origin.
