ISTORIA ROMEI ÎN MANUALELE ȘCOLARE DIN PERIOADA 1920-1948

Keywords: Romanian school texbooks, author, Roman state, Roman Empire.

Abstract: The History of Rome in School Textbooks from the Period 1920-1948. The author investigates how the history of the Roman state is presented in national and world history textbooks from the interwar period and the years immediately following it, up until the establishment of the communist regime in Romania. Among the conclusions drawn from this research are the following: the authors of the textbooks (O. Tafrali, Emil Diaconescu, Ioan Lupaș, Theodor Avr. Aguletti, C. C. Giurescu, etc.) included a large amount of information, which was not always adapted to the age level of the students for whom the textbooks were intended. However, these works were sometimes supplemented with images, maps, and reading excerpts – tools that were very useful in the learning process. The study also concludes that it was essential for school textbooks to be periodically revised and updated with current information, in line with the progress of Romanian historiography at the time. In some cases, entirely new curricula and, consequently, new textbooks were needed for various grade levels and types of schools – primary, secondary, teacher training (“normal”), commercial, high school, etc.
