VIRTVS ROMANA REDIVIVA. THE LATINITY OF THE NATION IN THE ROMANIAN PRESS IN TRANSYLVANIA IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY
Keywords: Latinity, Romanian press, Transylvania, national identity, the good emperor.
Abstract: The idea of Latinity was used in Transylvania in the 18th-19th centuries, both to stimulate and cultivate Romanians’ loyalty to the Vienna Court and to affirm and strengthen the national identity against the processes of denationalization specific to that time. In the second half of the 19th century, in the context of the general development of the Romanian press, Latinity gained an increasing importance, becoming a leitmotif in the effort of Transylvanian Romanians to have their natural rights recognized. Through our text we try to provide an overview on the significance that the press of the time gave to the idea of Latinity in the complicated context of that age.
