Keywords: translator, Horace (Horatius), Dumitru C. Ollănescu, biography, diplomat.

Abstract: A forgotten translator of Horatius: Dumitru C. Ollănescu. Dumitru C. Ollănescu, perhaps little known in the Romanian historiography, merged, over the course of several decades, his diplomatic career with the administrative one and with literary concerns. Since his university studies, he was interested in the work of the Latin poet Horace, and in 1891, was published at the Socec publishing house the volume Quintus Horatius Flaccus, Ode, Epode, Carmen Saeculare, translation into verse by Dumitru Constantin Ollănescu, vol. I – on which the translator worked for over a decade. The publication of the translation was not overlooked by contemporaries. For example, Titu Maiorescu published a review in which, on the one hand, he appreciated Ollănescu’s effort, and on the other hand, he surprised the difficulties of receiving and assimilating classical metrics in modern poetry.
