“O MISERA DOMUS HERCULEA”: UN CONTRIBUTO INEDITO ALLA FORTUNA UMANISTICA DEL MITO DI ERCOLE

Keywords: Iohannes de Segarellis, Seneca, Hercules furens, Additiones ad librum Iohannis Bocacii De casibus virorum illustrium.

Abstract: “O misera domus Herculea”: an unpublished contribution to the humanistic reception of the myth of Hercules. The study traces the medieval transmission of the myth of Hercules, beginning with the exegesis of the Hercules furens through the interpretations of the earliest commentators on Seneca’s tragedies and those of the Ovidian commentators on the Metamorphoses. Then, it focuses on Giovanni Segarelli’s interpretation of the character in a chapter of his Additiones ad librum Iohannis Bocacii De casibus virorum illustrium, preserved only in one manuscript, cod. Matritensis 17652. The article also provides a critical edition of chapters XXVIII and XXIX of the work.
