Abstract: Forms of dramatic narrative in Ammianus Marcellinus. The analysis of some passages from Ammianus’ Res gestae demonstrates how the Antiochian historian innovated narrative modules widely used in previous historiography. In particular, the figure of the beggar, introduced by L. Cornelius Sisenna into Latin historiography as a tragedy’s legacy and well attested by later historians, is originally collocated by Ammianus in a mass scene.
