History and objectives

The Faculty of History trains highly qualified specialists for the education and historical research in Romania. The graduates of The Faculty of History may embrace various careers: teachers (in the school system or higher education), researchers, museum curators, archaeologists, archivists, journalists, librarians, political analysts, public clerks (in national and international establishments).
History is among the oldest subjects in the higher education of the Romanian Principalities. In Moldavia, it was included in the syllabus of the Socola Seminar (Iaşi) as early as 1808. After the inauguration of Iaşi University (on October 26, 1860), History was taught for several decades within the Faculties of Philosophy and Letters. Following the Second World War, it became a section within the Faculty of History – Geography, History-Philology, Philology-History-Philosophy, History-Philosophy. Eventually, it became distinct in January 1990 as The Faculty of History.
The main research fields are World History (a field carrying on a tradition dating to the foundation of the Faculty); Prehistory and Ancient Archaeology (in this field, mostly at archaeological sites, it has developed a genuine school with national and international recognition); editing the sources of the Romanian middle ages; historical genealogy; political history of the Romanian Principalities/Romania; history of international relations and totalitarian regimes. At the same time, in recent years, new directions have been outlined, in agreement with the latest historiographical evolutions: social and mental collective history, history of culture and ideas, urban history, historical anthropology, social history of the Romanian diplomacy, propaganda, etc.

      • Dipartimento di Studi Classici e Cristiani de la Universita degli Studi “Aldo Moro” di Bari. The collaboration began in 1995 and reified in annual Socrates (LLP- Erasmus) mobilities for teachers and students in Iaşi and Bari, the annual participation in the Summer School conducted in Centro di Studi Micaelici e Garganici of Monte Sant’Angelo for master and Doctoral students at Centro di Spiritualita “Sanguis Christi” in Trani for Doctoral students, the biannual organisation of a scientific colloquium focusing on Classic and Late Antiquity. It also includes the editing of the journal Classica et Christiana, the joint tutoring of PhD theses, the publication of studies and books.
      • The Prehistory Service of the Liège University (Belgium), led by Professor Marcel Otte – the collaboration thus far has focused on the mutual exchanges of teaching staff and students.

The relations – established in 1995 and formally certified through a cooperation agreement between the Faculty of History in Iaşi and the UFR Lettres, Langues et Sciences Humaines in Angers – are based on a joint didactic and scientific collaboration programme, active from 1998.
